How to Make Your Clothing Donation Count
Donate with Purpose

Spring is around the corner. Closets are being cleaned. Winter wardrobes are being rotated out. And many families are looking for simple ways to give back.
If you’re planning to donate clothing this month to an ATRS donation bin — or any charitable clothing donation container — thank you.
You are part of something bigger.
But here’s something most donors don’t realize:
How you donate matters just as much as what you donate.
Why Proper Donation Makes a Difference
At ATRS, our team empties bins several times each week. We work hard to:
- Keep donation sites clean
- Respect the businesses that allow us to place bins on their property
- Protect your donated items from weather damage
- Prevent unnecessary waste
When donations are prepared correctly, your clothing has the best chance to be reused, recycled, or repurposed responsibly.
When donations are left outside the bin or placed loosely inside, problems can happen quickly.
Let’s make sure your generosity goes exactly where it’s meant to go.
What to Donate
Please donate:
- Gently used clothing
- Shoes (paired together)
- Household textiles (if the bin signage indicates they are accepted)
If you wouldn’t give it to a friend, it probably shouldn’t go in the bin.
Always Use a Kitchen Garbage Bag — Tied Shut
This is the most important step.
Place all clothing and shoes inside a standard kitchen garbage bag and tie it tightly before placing it in the bin.
Why?
- Loose clothing can get caught in the chute
- Untied bags can spill inside the container
- Open bags allow moisture to damage items
- Spilled items may become unsalvageable
A tied bag protects your donation from rain, humidity, dirt, and pests. It also protects the volunteers and workers who handle the materials.
One small step at home makes a big difference at the bin.
Please Do Not Leave Items Outside the Container
We understand — sometimes you pull up and the container looks full.
It can be tempting to set your bag beside it.
But when bags are left outside:
- Rain can ruin the clothing
- Animals can tear into bags
- Wind scatters items across the property
- Sponsor businesses are left with a mess
- Entire donations often must be discarded
Even if you plan to come back later, or assume we’ll pick it up soon, outside donations are frequently damaged before we arrive.
If the bin is full, please:
✔ Take your donation back home
✔ Visit another nearby bin location
✔ Return later that week
ATRS services our containers multiple times each week to prevent overflow while honoring our host business partners.
Respecting Our Sponsor Locations
Every ATRS bin sits on private property because a local business has chosen to support our mission.
These businesses trust us to:
- Keep their property clean
- Avoid overflow
- Maintain a professional appearance
When donations are bagged properly and not left outside the bin, it helps us preserve those relationships — which means more locations and more opportunities to give.
Your extra 30 seconds of care protects years of partnership.
A Simple Checklist Before You Donate
Before you drop off your items this March, ask yourself:
✔ Are the clothes and shoes clean and dry?
✔ Are they inside a kitchen garbage bag?
✔ Is the bag tied tightly shut?
✔ Am I placing the bag fully inside the bin?
✔ If the bin is full, am I taking the bag back with me?
If you can answer yes to each of these, you’re donating the right way.
Generosity Done Well
Donating clothing is more than clearing closet space.
- It supports reuse.
- It supports recycling.
- It reduces landfill waste.
- It supports charitable initiatives.
And when done properly, it respects the communities and businesses that make donation programs possible.
This March, as you clean, organize, and prepare for spring:
Donate generously.
Donate responsibly.
Donate with care.
Your clothing deserves it.
And so does the community.
